about

The Superposition of States

These are all pieces made using the code language SuperCollider, making various computer-based synthesizers and sample manipulator, granular synthesis, many of which I’ve been writing at and working on since Chaos Butterfly. So it’s sort of like using the various patches as an instrument or processing bank for the guitar or violin input.

I made most of these recordings at home while working on the patches for live shows. All tracks have single live passes recorded in real time, then the first four titles and the Solstice Reverser titles also had post-processing which attempted to create a pitch map of the processed sound and made that into discreet notes for a (sampled) orchestra.

Tracks 5-9 (and the bonus tracks 13-15) are essentially live takes, all post-processing is only mastering.

One of the ideas with much of this is ‘stretching the now’, that is to say, changing how long a moment is and superimposing multiple versions of the moment. Notes are smudged by processing them forwards and backwards, played back at different speeds, etc. Even more time-distortion happens in the orchestrated pieces, where clusters of phrases become offset from each other at different tempi. Each version of each note is the quantum collapse of the possibilities available for its manifestation as an event.
