The Next Attacking Wave

from Shine Out by Jonathan Segel

/

lyrics

you step and step and step and
you know the edge is nearing
you run and run and run but
you still haven't left the clearing
you're headed for the trees
at least a bit of cover
something to protect you
something to discover

you're standing in the open, living dangerously
building standing ladders under the flying osprey
the crows already circling
although we're all not dead yet
you blindly put another
foot into the trap net

nothing here stays the same
move a new piece in the game
what are you leaving behind?
is that really true?

--- look at them all run ahead, recede in the distance away
---now turn around and face, every next attacking wave

you can't escape the feeling
the emptiness of winter
the darkness of your thoughts and
the pin prick of the splinter
that pins your living feelings
up against the back board
with all the other subjects
of previous encounters
you think it's turning around
until you change direction
and see the failing foreground
facades of misdirection
the sheer and trembling blackness
temptations seem to chatter
to ease you into nothing
'cuz nothing really matters

the wish to just not exist: maybe it's hard to resist
so many things keep you here, your line is attached to the pier

go on, cast off, just leave your doubt, go on
